Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rusk?

Rusks are a dried sweet biscuit, and cut into a rectangular shape. They are usually eaten after being dunked into coffee or tea. Rusks can also be eaten just on their own, though they are a hard biscuit: watch your teeth!

Are Sunshine Rusks the same as teething rusks?

No. Teething rusks are very hard, bland biscuits. Sunshine Rusks are a crunchy sweet biscuit-like treat.

Are rusks suitable for babies?

No. Traditional South African rusks are crunchy. They can crumble and become choking hazards for infants. Everyone loves rusks, but toddlers and children should always be supervised when eating them.

How do you eat rusks?

Do I have to dunk my rusk in coffee or tea?

No. Rusks are a delicious treat dunked in your favourite beverage. A cup of cold milk, smoothie or even champagne… whatever you like! Rusks can be eaten on their own but beware: they are a thick, dried biscuit. Watch your teeth.

Rusks MUST be stored in an airtight container: they will ‘take on’ water if left in humid or wet conditions. Good examples include:

  • Airtight mason jar.
  • Biscuit tin.
  • Plastic container with a seal.
What do I do if my rusks have been have lost their crunch?

Kids left the lid off your rusk jar in 100% humidity??

Refresh your rusks by placing them in an oven at 100 degrees celsius for 15 minutes. If you have an air fryer, you can pop them in to cook for 2 minutes. Bonus: the house smells like baked rusks. You’re welcome.
